Just saw a few photos of the show from the other Forum. Visually
speaking, it's not bad at all. I hope they have managed to
film it. As for the singing and the sound effect, don't worry,
people can use as many studio recording as possible later
on. This tryout may not be for typical Opera lovers only,
but if it is directed cohesively enough, with its grandiose
scene, maybe it can be made into a nice Opera movie. I don't
know how many people here have seen the movie version of "Lady
Macbeth of the Mtsensk", the whole music and singing are done
in studio, although I haven't checked in detail whether it's
the same one as Rostro's EMI CD release. Anyway, aside of
a few graphical sex scenes, which may or may not offend some
hypercritics, that one is not a bad movie at all. Even though
the leading actress can't sing herself, but at least she is
pretty and seductive enough to make the story looks kind of
real, otherwise, if substitute her with a gigantic fat lady
who CAN sing, guys may long lost their appetites, let alone
been seduced. ^c^

"Hypercritics" ? Well, may be to certain extend, but I did
mean "Hypocrites" here.

donjuan (2003-09-29 09:25:50)
What a silly question! Of course Opera is to be Seen as well
as Heard! Before the invention of gramophone, people can only
access it through piano transcription at home, otherwise,
they have to go to the Opera house . During 19th century,
Opera was kind of like Movie today! Well, don't get me wrong,
I knew how bad the sound would be. But even it's played in
a stadium, carefully prepared acoustic, still can serve the
purpose at the minimum. The reason I like somebody bold enough
to try out something new, something grandiose, is that the
story does need it. Meanwhile, the plot also needs a smaller,
a more intimated atmosphere, (if you are familiar enough to
Aida, you should know what/when/where I mean), therefore I
said a movie version could be kind of optimum. You can cover
both extreme conditions, while pre/post recorded music/singing
can also solve the acoustic problem. As long as the play is
cohesive, I think it will doing fine. Let repeat it again,
cohesive, that's the key word, which is what Turandot at the
Forbidden City lacks the most.

The tragedy is, a luxury feast of vision submerges music
itself. Aida, a disaster!

Wow, this bad? No medicine to cure? :-)
